Clone houses explained

Not all dupes come from the same place. Here’s who the major clone and “inspired-by” houses are, what each is known for, and how to set your expectations on price, size and quality.

Some links on dupenote are affiliate links — see our disclosure. This guide names houses for description only; each is an independent brand, not affiliated with the originals they reference.

The dupe world splits loosely into two camps: Western clone houses that explicitly benchmark against designer and niche releases, and Middle-Eastern houses that have made “inspired-by” fragrances for decades, often with their own spin. Knowing the house tells you a lot before you even smell the juice.

The Western clone houses

ALT Fragrances

Community favourite for accuracy. ALT (formerly Alexandria-adjacent branding) targets close, note-for-note interpretations of designer and niche scents. Extrait concentrations, generous 50ml bottles, mid-tier price. Reviewers rate several ALT releases among the closest clones available.

Dossier

The most mainstream, thanks to heavy marketing. Dossier names each fragrance by its accord (“Ambery Saffron,” “Woody Sage”) and pairs it clearly with the original it echoes. Clean, approachable, widely available, frequent discount codes. Quality is solid mid-range; purists sometimes find them a touch simplified versus ALT or Dua.

Dua Fragrances

Prolific and ambitious — Dua clones an enormous catalogue, including hard-to-dupe niche houses, and sells in a range of sizes. Hit-rate varies precisely because the catalogue is so large, so lean on per-fragrance similarity scores rather than trusting the brand wholesale.

Oakcha

Sleek, affordable, subscription-friendly. Oakcha leans a little sweeter and more crowd-pleasing than strict accuracy, which makes them great for daily-driver dupes even when they aren’t the tightest match on paper.

Alexandria Fragrances

Enthusiast darling for niche clones and vintage reformulations. Batch-based, sometimes limited, generally high concentration. A go-to when the original is an expensive niche release rather than a designer bestseller.

The “inspired-by” houses

Lattafa

The value phenomenon of the last few years. Lattafa doesn’t market strict one-to-one clones so much as crowd-pleasing fragrances that often land near famous profiles — frequently with huge performance for the price. Think of them as “in the neighbourhood, loud, and $25.”

Armaf

Home of the single most famous dupe in the hobby (its Aventus-adjacent flanker), Armaf offers designer-style fragrances at drugstore prices with often-excellent longevity. Presentation is more premium than the price suggests.

Al Haramain

Long-established house with polished “inspired-by” designer profiles and strong performance. Reliable, widely stocked, frequently recommended as a safe first step into the inspired-by world.
